Darug Mudyin Gulang Canvas

This painting is the story of my people at the Native institute at Rooty Hill, we had our children put there to domesticate them which was a very cruel, it was a calculated way to sever our connections to country and our people.

In our country we are guided by our Mothers and Grandmothers who care for us and share their knowledge. From them we learn how we fit in with our people,

Darug people were dispossessed and during the times of colonisation children were taken from our families and put into institutes and moved onto missions.

This painting is the story of my people at the Native institute at Rooty Hill, we had our children put there to domesticate them which was a very cruel, it was a calculated way to sever our connections to country and our people.

The institute failed it had opened in 1826 and closed 1829, the children were sent to missions.

My painting shows that we were here and learning from our mothers with their digging sticks, we then learnt with domestic tools (clothes lines) the painting shows we passed through this institute but we are still here and still connected to our land and culture.
